Chief Operating Officer
Witt/Kieffer has been engaged to assist the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) in recruiting a Chief Operating Officer (COO). This not-for-profit organization establishes standards for physician specialty certification and physician performance assessment. ABMS communicates information about these standards to support the public's quest for safe, high-quality healthcare, and assists its Member Boards in developing and implementing educational and professional standards to evaluate and certify physician specialists.
As a senior member of the executive team, the COO will report directly to the President and CEO, Kevin Weiss, MD, MPH. The role of the COO is that of the primary business operations manager for the organization. The COO serves as the organization's senior financial officer, responsible for all aspects of the organization's finances, including budgeting, investments, and business development; and as the organization's chief administrative officer, which encompasses responsibility for human resources, information technology, risk management, marketing and communications, and legal affairs.
The ideal candidate would possess a graduate degree in management, administration or other field pertinent to the work of the ABMS, with a minimum of 10-15 years of general management experience with progressive responsibilities and at least 3 years at an executive level. Experience in the health care field is a plus, and strong business management skills combined with solid financial acumen is also desired. The successful candidate should have an entrepreneurial mind-set and possess a proven track record in the areas of business development and working with boards of directors and finance/audit committees. Executive leadership experience with a professional organization, association, federation, and/or governmental agency is desired.

Detailed Position Description: Chief Operating Officer
Senior Vice President, Professional and Scientific Affairs
Witt/Kieffer has been engaged to assist the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) in recruiting a Senior Vice President – Professional and Scientific Affairs (SVP-PSA). This not-for-profit organization establishes standards for physician specialty certification and physician performance assessment. ABMS communicates information about these standards to support the public's quest for safe, high-quality healthcare, and assists its Member Boards in developing and implementing educational and professional standards to evaluate and certify physician specialists.
As a senior member of the executive team, the SVP-PSA will report directly to the President and CEO. The role of the SVP-PSA is that of the primary leader within ABMS concerning all scientific policies, programs, and committee work related to the process of certification and recertification. This person will provide strategy and leadership regarding certification standards, maintenance of certification (MOC) processes, and the development of products and resources for the Member Boards to facilitate effective certification to support quality patient care. In this role, the SVP -PSA will act as the liaison between ABMS and the Member Boards, and will staff key committees of the ABMS Board of Directors relative to certification, recertification, and evaluation. The SVP-PSA will also provide strategy and leadership for ABMS regarding its health services research agenda, articulating the research issues that support the public trust mission of ABMS, and providing oversight to the grant-funded research programs that are awarded to ABMS and its subcontractors.
Candidates must have an advanced clinical degree and be board certified, with at least 7 to 10 years of experience in program evaluation and/or improvement of healthcare quality. The ideal candidate will have the rank of at least associate professor, is well connected in national professional societies and healthcare quality organizations, and has had demonstrable success with independent research efforts, attracting of grant support, and publishing articles in high-level, peer-reviewed journals.
